Franco-Indian Archaeological Mission in Ladakh

Twelve annual activity reports, listed below and available for download below, were produced between 2013 and 2024, totalling over 400 pages.

The mission’s entire scientific output (annual activity reports as well as field notebooks, scientific articles, papers, leaflets, etc.) is available in the MAFIL’s online collection.

Fieldwork reports

MAFIL Archaeological Reports Series n°1
Year 2013: preliminary report (40 pages) of surveys conducted in the Nubra valley by the Franco-Indian Archaeological Mission in Ladakh in 2013. The report deals with rock art, lithic tools, pottery and Buddhist ruins. It also deals with geomorphological and magnetic surveys.

Year 2014: preliminary report (46 pages) of surveys conducted in the Nubra valley by the Franco-Indian Archaeological Mission in Ladakh in 2014. The report deals with rock art, pottery, pre-Buddhist and Buddhist evidence. It also deals with magnetic surveys.

Year 2015: preliminary report (48 pages) of surveys conducted in the Nubra valley by the Franco-Indian Archaeological Mission in Ladakh in 2015 as well as mapping of the Buddhist site of Choskor north of the Leh oasis. The report deals with rock art and Buddhist evidence.

Year 2016: preliminary report (51 pages) of excavations conducted by the Franco-Indian Archaeological Mission in Ladakh in 2016 . The report results from the first and only excavation campaign at the Buddhist site of Choskor, north of Leh oasis.

Year 2017: conservation project for the Buddhist site of Leh Choskor, 39 pages.
MAFIL Archaeological Reports Series n°6
Year 2018: architectural and feasibility study for a three-year plan at the Buddhist site of Leh Choskor (archaeology, conservation and presentation to the public), 48 pages.

Year 2019: suspension of field activities in Ladakh, 2 pages.
MAFIL Archaeological Reports Series n°8
Year 2020: development of the Himalayan Rock Art Database (HiRADa), a Digital Humanities project, 14 pages.

MAFIL Archaeological Reports Series n°9

Year 2021: continuation of the Himalayan Rock Art Database (HiRADa) and initiation of a documentation manual for Himalayan rock art, 32 pages.

MAFIL Archaeological Reports Series n°10

Year 2022: continuation of the Himalayan Rock Art Database (HiRADa), creation of a thesaurus for Himalayan rock art, rock art fieldwork in Spiti and Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh and Yasin valley in Gilgit-Baltistan (testing of the documentation manual), 36 pages.

MAFHI Archaeological Reports Series n°1

Year 2023: continuation of the Himalayan Rock Art Database (HiRADa): publication in Open Access of the thesaurus and dataset. Processing of data from the Morka site (Yasin Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan). Rock art fieldwork in Lahul, Spiti and Zanskar, 47 pages.

MAFHI Archaeological Reports Series n°2

Year 2024: review of MAFIL activities (2012–2024) and outlook. Himalayan Rock Art Database: list of links to collections published in the Nakala data repository. Presentation of the closing event (conference, exhibition and study day), 22 pages.

Fieldwork sketchbooks

These sketchbooks document MAFIL’s first four campaigns (2013–2016). The drawings were produced in the field by Martin Vernier, and the texts (i,n French) are taken from the annual activity reports.
